Weekly Blog 16: The Season You're In Matters
You can’t maximize everything at once. That’s one of the first lessons I learned when I started training like an athlete, wrestling back in grade school and into high school/college. Whether you want to build muscle, get stronger, or improve speed, your approach has to change depending on your goal.
If you want to build muscle, your training looks different than if you’re peaking for a powerlifting meet. You might eat more, train with higher volume, and cut back on conditioning. When it’s time to focus on strength, you lower volume, increase intensity, and prioritize recovery. Then, when speed or power is the goal, you manage fatigue carefully to produce force quickly.
When competition comes, you’re not trying to build everything. You’re trying to show what you’ve built.
That’s how smart athletic programming works.
So why don’t we treat life the same way?
Why You Can’t Be Everything at Once
We often expect ourselves to be the best employee, athlete, spouse, parent, friend, entrepreneur, and version of ourselves all at the same time. When we can’t do it all at 100%, we feel like we’re failing.
But maybe we’re not failing.
Maybe we’re just in a different season.
There are times when your career needs more attention. Other times, your family needs you more. Sometimes your health demands focus. Maybe you’re building something new from the ground up. Or maybe your main job is simply to recover and get back to a place where you can perform again.
That doesn’t mean you’ve abandoned everything else. Just like reducing conditioning during a muscle-building phase doesn’t mean you’ll never do conditioning again, putting something on the back burner in life doesn’t mean it’s not important.
It means something else is more important right now.

How to Identify Your Current Season
The key is to identify what season you’re in and what deserves your focus. Ask yourself:
What is my main goal right now?
What quality do I need to build or express?
What can I reduce or pause to give more energy to this goal?
If your career needs more attention, it’s okay to dial back social activities or side projects. If your family needs you, it’s okay to pause some work goals. If your health needs focus, prioritize rest and recovery.

Why Recovery Is Part of the Process
Recovery isn’t just rest. It’s a vital part of adaptation. Just like athletes have recovery phases, you need time to recharge mentally and physically. Trying to push hard all the time leads to burnout and injury.
Recovery phases might look like:
Taking a break from intense workouts
Prioritizing sleep and nutrition
Spending time on hobbies or with loved ones
Reflecting on progress and adjusting goals
Remember, recovery doesn’t mean you’re falling behind. It means you’re preparing for the next phase.

How to Manage Stress by Embracing Your Season
A lot of stress comes from trying to maintain every part of life at its maximum. You want to be the best at work, home, fitness, and social life all at once. That’s impossible.
Instead, focus on what matters most right now. Accept that some things will get less attention. That’s not failure. It’s smart prioritization.
For example, if you’re launching a new business, your social life might take a backseat. If you’re recovering from injury, your work hours might be lighter. If you’re raising young kids, your fitness goals might shift temporarily.
This mindset reduces stress and helps you focus your energy where it counts.
Planning Your Next Phase
Once you’ve built or expressed a quality, it’s time to plan the next phase. Maybe you’ve built muscle and now want to focus on strength. Or you’ve recovered and are ready to push harder.
Use tools like training logs, coaching, or goal-setting apps to track your progress and plan your phases. Gladiator Strength LLC’s coaching program can help you design these phases intelligently, so you don’t waste time or energy.
Remember, the goal is not to do everything at once. It’s to build, recover, and then move into the next phase with purpose.

Final Thoughts
You don’t have to be everything at once. The season you’re in matters. Focus on what deserves your attention right now. Build it. Recover. Then move on to the next phase.
That’s not falling behind. That’s intelligent programming.
